The excursion to the Gornergrat is one of the most famous and truly spectacular experiences and a highlight of every visit to Switzerland. A cogwheel train has transported passengers from the station in Zermatt to an altitude of 3089m since 1898, across stunning bridges, through galleries and tunnels, idyllic forests, past gorges and mountain lakes. The iconic view from the Gornergrat platform is dominated by the Matterhorn, but altogether there are 29 four-thousand-metre peaks forming an impressive mountain panorama completed by the magnificent Gorner glacier, the third largest glacier in the Alps. There are several stops on the way which are starting points of various hiking and walking trails and three different bike routes. In winter there’s a toboggan run from Rotenboden to Riffelberg and ski pistes down to the valley.
